Subsea Pipeline Infrastructure and Its Environmental Impact

Subsea pipelines are an important part of offshore infrastructure used to transport oil, gas, and other fluids between offshore facilities and onshore or subsea processing systems. Although pipelines provide an efficient method of transporting resources over long distances, their installation and operation may affect the marine environment. Activities such as seabed preparation, trenching, pipe laying, and maintenance can disturb sediments and marine habitats, while pipeline leakage or damage may create additional environmental risks. This article discusses the function of subsea pipeline infrastructure and its potential environmental impacts in marine areas. A literature review method was used by examining scientific publications related to subsea pipeline construction, installation activities, operational risks, and marine environmental effects. The reviewed studies show that environmental impacts are influenced by factors such as pipeline route, installation method, seabed conditions, vessel activities, and the characteristics of transported materials. Proper planning, monitoring, inspection, and maintenance are therefore important to reduce environmental disturbance and maintain pipeline integrity. The development of appropriate subsea pipeline management can support offshore activities while reducing potential impacts on marine ecosystems.
